Atypical is an ambitious series; the Netflix original follows Sam /Keir Gilchrist/, an autistic 18-year-old as he comes of age and his family comes along with him. It’s moving, darkly funny, breathes new life into the family dramed, and manages to handle mental health in a way that the platform’s other big teen series, 12 Reasons Why, never does. The manner in which Atypical tackles autism is a separate subject entirely, but its encouragement of seeking help through a therapist or trusted adult is huge .. and something never quite addressed properly on 12 Reasons Why, a show with a central theme of depression and self-harm.
